An estimated ten percent of all athletes participating in contact sports suffer a concussion each season. Concussions occur when a blow to the head or neck interrupts brain function. The effects of these concussions vary between individuals, and many mild concussions are undiagnosed and unreported. Most athletes recover from concussions completely and can return to play following an appropriate period of recovery. However, knowing when it is safe to return to play in order to avoid serious brain injury is crucial.
The Sports Specialists at SPC have an abundance of experience with sports concussion management. In fact, some of SPC’s practitioners have been involved in sports concussion research. Our team of specialists deals with the comprehensive needs of the athlete who has sustained a concussion, in order to facilitate his or her recovery and safe, confident return to play.
Safety comes first when it comes to our athletes. By assigning a numerical value to the parameters affected by a concussion (reaction time, memory, and delayed memory), our doctors are able to make unbiased return-to-play decisions thereby reducing the risk of post-concussion syndrome. For improved results, bring the team or athlete in for a pre-season baseline test to which follow-up results are compared.
